During a recent trip to the library, Liv made a weather wheel.

She loves the weather and coloring, so she was excited to combine

both into this project. After carefully coloring the different

types of weather, she attached the arrow. Each day, she points

the arrow towards the type of weather we are experiencing.

Sometimes, she changes it a few times a day!

Liv can't wait to make her next project at the library.

Sean is the author of the popular SpeechTechie blog which features useful strategies to help students improve their speech - language abilities. Speaking of useful strategies, our latest story discusses some different ways to stay organized. As you listen to the story, consider the following: How do you keep your room clean?

VORACIOUS VOCABULARY

What did you say? A word of the day! In our story

there are many juicy words that are fun to use and say.

continent: one of the main landmasses of the globe, usually reckonedas seven in number (Europe, Asia, Africa, North America,South America, Australia, and Antarctica).

crimson: deep purplish-red

heap: a group of things placed, thrown, or lying one on another; pile

panic: a sudden overwhelming fear

quiver: a case for holding or carrying arrows

synchronicity: an apparently meaningful coincidence in time of two or more similar or identical events that are casually unrelated

One Amazing Hero!

Once upon a time there was a great superhero. His name was Spicer. Spicer the Great to be exact.

One day Spicer was patrolling the streets when he heard a siren. There was a fire somewhere so he flew off to locate the fire. It was coming from the jewelry store. It wasn't a fire. It was a robbery!

When Spicer got to the crime scene there were policemen everywhere. Once he pushed his way through the crowd he saw the gigantic glass display cases were all broken! Spicer used his x-ray vision powers to find footprints.

When he found the footprints they led all the way out of the city. Only Fast Max could get out of the city in such little time. Fast Max was super hard to catch.

When Spicer found the end, the footprints went straight through a wall of an old abandoned warehouse. Only Dr. Invisible could go through walls. But he is in jail. If he escaped the police would tell Spicer of course. But maybe it was Fancy Nancy. Who could it be? Spicer was gonna find out soon.

Spicer burst threw the door but nobody could see him with his invisibility powers. He saw a kid, perhaps a 10-year old running around at a fantastic speed. Just like Fast Max! He was flying through things without any rubble flying about. Just like Dr. Invisible and Fancy Nancy. Spicer just found the criminal!

"Stop kid", yelled Spicer. He stopped.

"First of all", he said, "My name is not kid. It is Cowman."

"Well", said Spicer, "You're still going to jail." Just then the cops broke in. Cowman was handcuffed and sent away to jail.

A few days later Dr. Pepper, Spicer's real identity, walked out of his office. He was about to pull a red cape out of his briefcase when he saw Freezeray fly to the scene. "I'll let him get it this time", he thought. When he got home he saw his kids watching the news. Very unusual so he sat down and watched, too. The anchor said that the true identity of Cowman was revealed. It was a kid from Kathy and Wyatt's school, Dr. Pepper's kids. His name is Malden Malcolm and he became a super villain from all that bullying. He was driven mad!

Then Kathy said, "Daddy, that's the kid I told the bullies to stop bullying!"

"You did the right thing, Kathy", said Dr. Pepper (Spicer).

Our daughter's comfort items are a huge part of her life. One of them went missing for almost a year. In it's place we hunted down a new one. We decided to juxtapose them after we found the old one and it was amazing the difference in the wear. I have a feeling it won't be long before they both look similar!

drawn in 4th grade art class. The LOVE picture was used to made
some drink coasters out of for Christmas gifts. Addy has always loved art and had a greatgrandfather that was a very good artist.

Our Year in Stories

I was sitting here thinking this morning about our newest story we are writing. Then I remembered today was the last day of 2011. How crazy is that? That got me thinking about which stories filled this year for us. So, I went back to take a look through the blog. I found some other things that we did too!

We created 39 Lighting the Way With Words, made our second video tutorial, hosted 2 guest posts on the blog, had 7 creative people record bumpers to kick off our stories, recorded our first monthly segment for the Musing Mommies podcast, and created a resource called "Story Snapshots" on the blog where you could find a short synopsis of each story along with links to the audio and activities.

I am not usually a bragger, but please bear with me as I brag just a little.

Our son, now able to read almost independently, will try to tackle any book that comes into his path. This year I noticed he has been very partial to the classic Christmas poem titled Twas the Night Before Christmas. Dare I say that I am positive you all have heard this one before?

So, here is my brag. The other day we were sitting at the table finishing up his homework and he says to me, "Mama, want to hear something?". Bracing myself, never quite sure what to expect to hear out of our boy, I heard something that literally blew me away.

He began reciting, from memory, Twas the Night Before Christmas. I smiled and nodded along. When he finished the first stanza I started clapping, thinking he was finished. He held his pointer finger up at me and told me to wait because he was not through. He then continued on, through most of the poem, from beginning to end. He needed some prompting when we got to the reindeer because he really thought "Rudolf" should have been included in the list. He then lost track and skipped right to the end where he yells out, "HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!".

I clapped, cheered, whistled and then got an idea. I asked him if he would want to record the story for all of you. He got a huge grin and said, "Get your phone! Let's do it now!"

Twas the Night Before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

The other day in the car we were listening to Christmas carols and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" came on the radio. As we sang, we got to the line "Here we are as in olden days, happy golden days of yore". Our 6 year old promptly asked me "Mama, what does 'yore' mean?".

Of course I couldn't just give him the answer. I had to sing the line to him again. Loudly. And with a southern twang. Just like the one my friend Miss Amy has. As we were giggling, he began to understand from the context clues in the line that they were days from long ago.

He then said, "So, when you were a kid, a long time ago, those were days of yore?". I quickly corrected his mistake and told him that it was longer than that. Like when his great-great-grandparents were children. Satisfied by my answer, he asked me to turn up the Christmas music so that we could sing...without the southern twang.

MOON CHART MISSION

The other night we were driving home and our son asked us a question about the moon. He wanted to know why the moon looked so big sometimes and then, at other times, why it looked so small. We explained to him how the sun shines its light constantly on half of the moon. As the moon orbits around the Earth, we see different portions of that illuminated area. We explained that this process is called waxing and waning. When the moon waxes, it appears to grow in size. When the moon wanes, it appears to decrease in size. Did you know that each month the moon goes through eight phases of waxing and waning? You can learn more about their phases here at KidsAstronomy.com.

So, starting today, on the first day of December, we are going to keep a "MOON CHART". We will observe what the moon looks like each night and then draw its shape in the square for that day. At the end of the month the kids will visibly see how the moon's shape appeared to change throughout the month!

First, one team has the ball, then the other team has the ball. Each team takes a turn on offense and defense and then they switch. You know what else is all about turn taking? Our new story! 1. Have an adjective challenge in your house. Give each person a season or two, depending on the number of players. Each person makes a list of words to describe that season. Whoever has the most adjectives on his or her list wins the challenge. You can play this game over and over again using foods, animals, vehicles, etc.

2. Make a list or draw a picture of all the things you are thankful for and share it with the ones you love.

3. Play a board game that practices taking turns. Some of our favorites are Candy Land, Trouble, and Uno. Of course, there is always the I'm Sorry Truck board game that you can download and play! Make sure you congratulate the person who wins!

We have something different for you! This is a guest post by Robert Lobitz of http://birdcages.net. He wanted to share some interesting facts and information about proper care for parrots. We love learning new things here at Night Light Stories. Thank you, Rob, for sharing your expertise!

There are many types of parrots – over 300 total.

If you remember Iago from Aladdin or Blu from Rio, then you have seen a parrot. The word “parrot” means a family of different types of birds such as cockatoos, amazons, and macaws. There are over 300 types of parrots in the world, mostly living in South America, Asia and Australia. You can tell the difference between parrots and other birds, like crows or woodpeckers by looking at them carefully. Most parrots have a thick, down-curved beak, stand straight up and have claws on their feet. Most parrots are vegetarians and only eat seeds, nuts, and fruit, while a few big parrots are omnivores and will eat seeds and also small animals like bugs and mice.

Parrots can live very long, usually longer than dogs and cats. Small parrots usually live up to 20 years, while some types of parrots have been reported to live 80 to 100 years. One of the smallest types of parrots is the Buff-faced Pygmy Parrot, which is around 3 inches tall, about half as tall as a pencil. One of the biggest types of parrots is the Hyacinth Macaw which is around 3 feet tall, about half as tall as a mop or broom. Would you like a parrot this big to sit on your shoulder?

Some people love parrots for pets, other people think they are high maintenance and take too much work. Parrots, like Blu in the movie, can learn to love their owners and recognize them from other humans. But parrots need a lot of attention and care. Parrots need to be kept in a parrot bird cage to make sure they don’t fly away or get lost. In their cage they need toys, mirrors, food and water. Parrots are very curious and need to play, swing and peck at things all the time. A parrot bird cage should be at least twice the size of the bird’s wingspan. This means if you had two of the same parrot, put them side by side and told them to spread their wings as far as they can, the cage should be that tall and wide.

It is important to plan where you want to put the cage. It should be away from windows, doors and drafts. It should be in a part of the home where people are a lot, because parrots love people, noise and movement. The parrot cage must be cleaned often and the owner has to make sure there is enough food and clean water all the time.
